On his debut Asterism, UGTF leans into a quieter, stripped-down kind of electronic music, letting the beats stay sharp and the atmosphere feel slightly off-center and secretive. Like a bird stretching its wings, UGTF stretches his production into several different genres, all confined to just shy of eleven minutes. Here, he gives a track-by-track tour.
Point Four
“This style was something I needed to introduce very early on if I wanted to keep up the motivation for making and actually releasing music. It has that underground rage & EDM feel I’ve been into. The name comes from 100.4 degrees, the temperature where a fever is diagnosed. I liked that cutoff point as an idea. And even though it opens the EP, it’s not meant to represent everything I can do.”
Alice Wafer
“Alice started out as this really early demo I made when I was first learning how to produce in a course. I kept the little pieces I made since and tried to turn them into something better. The name ‘Alice Wafer’ is kind of unwise on purpose. It feels almost like a character or an alter ego of some sort. I’ve always liked tracks with titles that had cryptic names and such, so I kept it.”
Salv’s Dembow
“Salv’s Dembow, like Point Four, started as a short snippet I made and put on SoundCloud earlier this year. Both of those older ideas ended up fitting naturally into the EP. This one has that old dancehall and reggaeton feel, plus the dembow rhythm that ties it all together. I like mixing sounds and genres just to see what happens, and this track is basically the result of some experiments. ‘Salv’ is short for Salvador. I’m sure some people who followed the creation of this EP know who that is.”
The Fever
“This track came together quite quickly in my mind. I wanted to make something that sits in that post-hyperpop, pre-EDM revival space, and it all just clicked. The title was something I always knew I’d use at some point, because of my artist name and the whole idea of what the ‘fever’ represents in my sound. This track felt strong enough to finally carry that name.”
